Thanks for posting this—all sounds relatively positive. I was a bit concerned some time back seeing Andreessen’s name associated, since he’s affiliated with the NRx neoreactionaries doing so much harm to our democracy now. However, at this point all of the available and widely used communication platforms have that vulnerability (e.g. Facebook bent the knee to our current Admin and messed with their algorithms some time back). I think we can build community here for the near term at least, which will be useful.
Thanks Kristen! I was concerned too because of Andreessen’s association. Since the financial part of this is beyond my understanding, and so is the technical part, the best I could do was post the information I read.
And, since I only joined a few months ago, I was worried that I’m finally feeling like I’m a part of this community, and I couldn’t stand it if a billionaire Republican was allowed to destroy it.
But, the good news, which I didn’t think to include, is this: Heather Cox Richardson is the most successful person here, with an audience of 2.5 million people. And Robert Reich has 1.5 million. And, they are both principled Democrats. So, it wouldn’t make sense for the owners to allow anyone to try and sensor us, because neither Richardson or Reich would remain if it happened.
yes, HCR and Robert Reich’s content were a big part of why I moved here—both have had regular content on Facebook (which is getting sketchier to do anything political on, as Zuck bent the knee back in late 2024). Both are terrific sources of grounded, fact based history and information. There have been so many defections from MSM to here that many other left leaning and centrist political voices are also on here. The opportunity to build a community of people still living in the fact-based world of humanity and care for each other’s basic agency/humanity and the rule of law and constitution is terrific here and my experience has been almost exclusively positive. Many fewer trolls to avoid relative to Facebook (and I never could cope with that aspect of Twitter/X, even before it went full on MechaHitler, ala Elon’s Grok.
